Who could Tottenham face in the Champions League? Real Madrid, PSG and RB Leipzig would be the nightmare group for Spurs

TOTTENHAM could have their work cut out to qualify from the Champions League group stage for the first time in seven years.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be seeded third in Thursday’s draw, if either Napoli or Sevilla qualify from their respective playoffs against Nice and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Both sides are very much in the driving seat at the moment, meaning Spurs are staring down the barrel at a potential horror group.

The North Londoners would have it slightly easier if they end up second seeds, but that by no means guarantees qualification.

Spurs were knocked out of an easy-looking group with Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow last season.

Here is all you need to know about their potential group.

Tottenham cannot face any English teams in the group stage.

If, as is likely, they end up in pot 3, Spurs definitely will not face Basel, Anderlecht, Roma or Besiktas.

But if both Napoli and Sevilla are knocked out than Spurs will avoid Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, PSG and Porto.

The prospect of a nightmare group looms large for Spurs.

In Pot 1 they will be desperate to avoid Juventus, Bayern Munich and champions Real Madrid.

A pairing of Real Madrid with Neymar’s PSG would be a worst case scenario, as well as any draw that lines up Barcelona with Bayern Munich or Juventus.

Most of the teams in pot 4 are not yet known, but Spurs will not want to play German upstarts RB Leipzig after their troubles against Bayer Leverkusen last season.

A kinder draw for Spurs in pot 3 could see them face Spartak Moscow, Porto and one of the smaller potential qualifiers like Qarabag or Apoel Nicosia.

And if Spurs end up in pot 2, they will the likes of Atletico, Barca, PSG and Dortmund, with a clash against Anderlecht, for example, holding little fear.
