FRANCE Nice Terror Attack2At least 80 people have died and scores have been injured after a truck crashed into a crowd of people in the south of France.

A further 18 people are seriously injured and many others hurt. Witnesses described how the driver of the articulated lorry sped along a promenade packed with spectators leaving a fireworks display marking France’s national holiday.

Francois Hollande, the country’s president, said the killings were a terrorist act and extended the state of emergency for a further three months.

    President Hollande speaks at press conference in Paris
    The President of France has said the death toll is 77 people “including children” and that 20 more people are wounded.

    He says: “France has been struck on the day of her national holiday... the symbol of liberty.

    “We must show our solidarity towards the victims and their families. All means are being deployed to help the wounded. France as a whole is under the threat of Islamic terrorism. We have to demonstrate absolute vigilance and show determination that is unfailing.

    He told reporters that the state of emergency in France which was due to end on 26 July will now be extended for three months and that no act of terrorism will lead them to give up their fight against terrorism in Syria and Iraq.

    Here is what we know so far
    • A large truck laden with firearms and explosives barrelled for two kilometres through the crowds on the sea front in Nice after the fireworks display on Bastille Day.
    • 80 people have been confirmed dead and many more are injured and being treated at a temporary hospital near to where the crash took place.
    • The incident is being treated as an act of terror, although no terrorist organisation has yet claimed the attack.
    • The driver of the lorry was shot dead by police. They are not yet sure whether he had accomplices or acted alone.
    • Authorities said the man was firing from the window of the vehicle as he “zigzagged” through the crowd, trying to hit as many people as possible.
    • Identity papers of a 31-year-old French-Tunisian man were found in the lorry although it ishas not been confirmed that he was connected with the attack.
    • President Francois Hollande cut short a trip to Avignon to attend a crisis meeting at the interior Ministry in Paris.

    A police officer has told the AFP press agency that the identity papers of a 31-year old Franco-Tunisian man, a resident of Nice, have been found inside the truck.
    We must stress though that there is no indication whether this ID belonged to the driver of the truck, the truck’s owner or someone completely unconnected to the truck.

    France has been under a state of national emergency since the terror attacks on Paris in November last year which claimed 130 lives.

    President Francois Hollande said on Thursday that the measures would by lifted by 26 July, to coincide with the end of the Tour de France, saying that the they could not be extended indefinitely:

    It would make no sense. That would mean we’re no longer a republic with the rule of law applied in all circumstances.
