Walmart ‘back to school’ sign hung above gun display: Photo goes viral

Walmart has been roasted by social media for an instore display.

A SERIOUSLY tone deaf back-to-school sign at a Walmart store in America has gone viral for all the wrong reasons, prompting a quick apology from the mega chain.

The company faced a backlash after a picture was posted online of a display case full of rifles in the sporting section of the store below a sign which read: “Own the school year like a hero”.

The sign was a generic piece of promotion and was part of a super hero themed campaign, ostensibly designed to entice shoppers into buying some new gear for the coming school season, but it’s anyone’s guess as to what exactly the sign was meant to convey in this context.

In a country plagued by highly publicised episodes of school shootings, it’s definitely not a good look. After all, handguns and firearms reportedly kill more children in the US than the flu.

Walmart is the largest retailer of firearms and ammunition in the United States and one Twitter user had a simple question for the chain: “What are you suggesting?”

The picture has been skewered online by social media users as Walmart reportedly “launched an investigation” and issued an apology.

“What’s seen in this photograph would never be acceptable in our stores,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement. “We regret this situation and are looking into how it could have happened.”

Only in America.

Take a look at some of these alarming figures behind America’s love for guns. Data current as of December 2015
