Ho, July. 4, GNA- The
Volta Regional Cyclists Association has commemorated this year’s Republic Day
Celebration with a cycling competition in Ho.

The 80 kilometer race
from Ho to Ziofe and back, was contested by 18 cyclists from across the
region.

Mr. Amen Ametor,
Secretary of the Association told the Ghana News Agency that the race was part
of a series of cycling activities to revive Republic Day celebrations, which
according to him, was losing its significance.

He said the
Association sought to train the youth to compete in the regional and national
competitions, saying that, “the health benefits and environmental
friendliness of cycling should motivate people to take up the sport.”

Mr. John Gbedemah,
President of Quickstep, a Cycling Club, which sponsored the competition said,
cycling could boost tourism in the region and encouraged the youth to join the
sport and make it popular.

He said Tsito would
host a cycling tour during the Awudome Yam Festival in September.

Samuel Ahiakpatsi, 37,
won the race and would represent the region at the national championships next
year.
