UAE Veep builds 2nd SHS in Ghana

The Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Obaid, says the best legacy worth bequeathing to a child is education.

He said through that the child can determine his full potential and future of his or her life. The Vice President therefore challenged parents to invest in the education of their children irrespective of financial costs.

He said this at the inauguration of Al-Maktum Senior High School, which he built for the people of Yendi in the Northern Region. This is the second senior high school he has built in the Northern Region, the other one in Tamale.

The Vice President entreated parents to make use of education as a tool to alleviate poverty in country. The school, which is science based, is equipped with 20 computers for ICT program, Home Science, Physics, Biology and Chemistry laboratories.

The Regent of Dagbon Traditional Area, Kampokuya Naa Andani Yakubu Abdulai, has advised management of schools to discuss the code of discipline of their respective institutions with students to ensure that they adhere to them.

He said it is incumbent upon management of the school especially the headmaster and its staff to carefully go through these regulations with their students during orientation services and other available space within the curriculum. The Regent, who is the acting overlord of Dagbon, added that it was through frequent reminders that students will get to know and understand the regulations better and therefore comport themselves.

His speech, which was read on his behalf by Wali Lana Abdulai Sulemana, also called for effective supervision by school management and also advised parents to visit their wards in schools to access their performances and not to literary dump them in the schools.

He said lack of interactions between school administrators and the students lead to some indiscipline which does not augur well for the development of education in some parts of the county. The Regional Director of Education, Alhaji Mohammed Haruna Cambodia, appealed to the Vice President to consider establishing Islamic University in the Northern Region, adding that Arabic Language and Islamic Studies will now be examinable subjects as from next academic year by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

He said only Islamic College of Wenchi is the only accredited institution in the country that offers Islamic and Arabic Language and stressed the need for one to be in the Northern Region. The Director urged the school administration to register the school for a West African Examination Council for a registered number within three years to enable the school to become an examinable center.

The headmaster of the school, Hassan Mustapha, said the vision of the school is to become a centre of excellent in ICT and Arabic Language as well as the other disciplines.
