Tottenham eye Alfie Mawson and Ben Gibson as they search for £20million Kevin Wimmer replacement

TOTTENHAM are looking at a pair of young English defenders as replacements for Kevin Wimmer, according to reports.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants wither Alfie Mawson from Swansea or Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson to boost his squad next season.

But the north London club want to sell first – and that could see the powerful Austrian Wimmer on the move.

The 24-year-old played only eight matches last season but Spurs are still demanding £20million for the centre-back.

Southampton are interested in Wimmer as are several clubs in the Bundesliga.

According to the Daily Mirror, Pochettino wants one of the English pair as he looks to push for a Premier League title push and a trophy next season.

The Argentine wants options as he often switches between a back three and a back four.

Middlesbrough star Gibson has been linked with a string of clubs this summer, including Leicester City, Stoke, Chelsea, West Brom and Southampton.

Boro have slapped a £25m price-tag on Gibson, who was a rare bright spot in a miserable season, but so far teams have not been willing to pay that much.

Spurs monitored Mawson while he was on England U21 duty in Poland, helping Aidy Boothroyd’s team to the semi-finals.

The London-born centre-back, 23, had an impressive Premier League season after jumping from League One and even chipped in with four goals.
