He was forced to roll up his socks due to having 10 players away on holiday leaving him with just 4 days to prepare for the game at the McEnhill Stadium.

But sadly for Steve Claridge it was Pompey who got their pre-season off to a winning start with three second half strikes against Salisbury.

Salisbury however did well to hold Portsmouth to a goalless draw at half time in front of a 1,766 attendance.

Pompey had their first goal at 53 minutes, Curtis Main slotted a pass through to Milan Lalkovic who then put the ball into the back of the net.

Ben Davies delivered the second goal for Portsmouth from a Carl Baker corner along with Ben Close ending the game 3-0 with a lovely finish underside of the bar.

And of course there is nothing like a pre-season game without some on the pitch mix up as Portsmouth media team tweeted: “It’s a bit confusing on the pitch at the moment, as Salisbury have two number 14s, two 17s and one player with no number (74 mins)

Along with Pompey’s win there was of course a lot of praise for Steve Claridge across Twitter:
