Steve Claridge dusts off his boots aged 51 to play up front for Salisbury in a friendly against Portsmouth

 

STEVE CLARIDGE came out of retirement this afternoon as he dusted off his boots aged 51 to play for Salisbury against Portsmouth in a pre-season friendly.

Salisbury manager – and former Pompey player and boss played 81 minutes before subbing himself off.

Claridge was regularly shouting at his players whilst playing upfront this afternoon[/caption]

He was forced to roll up his socks due to having 10 players away on holiday leaving him with just 4 days to prepare for the game at the McEnhill Stadium.

But sadly for Steve Claridge it was Pompey who got their pre-season off to a winning start with three second half strikes against Salisbury.

Salisbury however did well to hold Portsmouth to a goalless draw at half time in front of a 1,766 attendance.

Pompey had their first goal at 53 minutes, Curtis Main slotted a pass through to Milan Lalkovic who then put the ball into the back of the net.

Ben Davies delivered the second goal for Portsmouth from a Carl Baker corner along with Ben Close ending the game 3-0 with a lovely finish underside of the bar.

And of course there is nothing like a pre-season game without some on the pitch mix up as Portsmouth media team tweeted: “It’s a bit confusing on the pitch at the moment, as Salisbury have two number 14s, two 17s and one player with no number (74 mins)
