Steve Bould flies home from Arsenal’s pre-season tour of China after undergoing emergency neck surgery

ARSENAL assistant manager Steve Bould has flown home from the Gunners’ pre-season tour of China after emergency neck surgery.

The former Gunners defender, 54, underwent surgery in Australia after discovering a hernia in his neck and missed the Bayern Munich game on Wednesday.

Arsene Wenger confirmed the news, saying his No2 went home at the weekend to recover.

The Arsenal boss claimed: “Steve Bould has a hernia on his neck and had to do it in Australia and he couldn’t travel.”

Wenger added that Bould is fine and only went home to get back to 100 per cent for the new season.

He added: “He went home on Saturday. He’s OK. He went home and he’s good.”

The Arsenal chief was joined by former goalkeeper and new coach Jens Lehmann, as well as Vic Akers for the penalty shootout win over Bayern in the International Champions Cup in Shanghai.

Bould’s absence didn’t go unnoticed by the Gunners faithful either.

One social media user wrote: “Has anyone seen Steve Bould on this Far East tour? I’ve not seen him anywhere in the pics and videos since the team left.”

Another said: “Where’s Steve Bould btw? Haven’t seen him anywhere near Arsene since Jens been around.”

Wenger quickly moved to reveal Bould was still part of Arsenal’s set-up, but was purely at home recuperating from the surgery.

On Wednesday, Alex Iwobi netted a late equaliser to force a shootout against the German giants, with Emiliano Martinez the hero in the sweltering Shanghai heat.
