Small-scale business operators cry for support

Agogo (Ash), July 21,
GNA – Small-scale businesses have called for strong support by the government
to aid optimal operation and growth.

Mr. Jerry Blankson,
the Asante-Akim North District Chairman of the Association of Small-Scale
Industries (ASSI), said they should substantially benefit from the stimulus
package for the private sector.

The association – made
up mainly of artisans has been playing vital role in job and wealth creation.

Speaking at its
meeting in Agogo, Mr. Blankson indicated that they had been making significant
contribution to the revenue of the metropolitan, municipal and district
assemblies and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

He, however, said this
notwithstanding, they had been left on their own with little or no push by the

He asked that things
radically changed to help them to expand their businesses.

The support could come
in the form of the supply of equipment, machinery and other incentive packages,
he added.

Mr. Blankson said ASSI
such assistance would enable them to train more young people in various trades
and vocations to reduce unemployment.

He spoke of plans to
switch to the use of solar energy for their operations and said the leadership
was already in talks with some companies to design solar panels that met the
power needs of the members and affordable.

The initiative, he
stated, would cut down the cost of doing business.

Mrs. Ophelia Yeboah,
the Deputy Chairperson, advised the members to register their businesses to
enable them to bid for district assembly contracts.

She encouraged all
artisans and other small-scale businesses to join the association and said the
benefits were enormous.
