Rwandan President Paul Kagame Wins Third Term

The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, has won a third term in office after coming comfortably on top in Friday’s Presidential elections.

Kagame won 99% of the votes cast in a massive landslide which gives him another seven year term in office.

Kagame has been widely praised for putting Rwanda back on track after the country’s brutal civil war, but his critics say he clamps down on opposition and rules through fear.

A referendum in 2015 changed the country’s constitution to allow Kagame to rule for a third term.

The 59 year old has been in power since ending the country’s civil war in 1994.
