Romelu Lukaku could become most-expensive player of all-time if ‘achievable’ bonuses are met at Manchester United to take transfer fee to £90million

MANCHESTER UNITED could have signed Romelu Lukaku for a WORLD RECORD fee, according to reports.

The Belgian joined the 20-times English champions from an Everton for an initial £75million.

But that fee could be set to rise as high as £90m with add-ons.

And ESPN report the two clauses for which the Toffees would receive payments of £7.5m are very “achievable”.

Should United pay the full amount, it would surpass the £89m they paid Juventus for Paul Pogba last summer — which is the current world record transfer fee.

Old Trafford chief executive Ed Woodward has regularly negotiated deals with several bonus payments.

Earlier this season, United paid Monaco a further £8.6m for Anthony Martial after he reached 25 goals for the Red Devils.

The Ligue 1 champions will be due further fees should he earn 25 France caps and earn a nomination for the Ballon d’Or.

Should the deal for Lukaku, 24, remain at ‘just’ £75m, he will be the fifth most-expensive player in history as things stand.

And it will be the costliest transfer ever between two Premier League clubs.

The former Chelsea striker could not contain his delight when the deal was completed.

He said: “When Manchester United and Jose Mourinho come knocking at the door it is an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I could not turn down.

“You could see the fight, determination and the spirit in this team during the Europa League final and I want to become a part of that.”

Lukaku has been training with his new team-mates as United begin their pre-season training at UCLA.
