UBER has ended its controversial search for a new boss with Dara Khosrowshahi from travel company Expedia reportedly being selected as CEO.

The New York Times reports Mr Khosrowshahi emerged as the leading candidate over a weekend of Uber board meetings with three finalists.

The multibillion-dollar company has been without a leader since its co-founder Travis Kalanick stepped down in June amid pressure from major investors over reports of a “toxic” workplace culture.

Mr Kalanick resigned following an investigation into widespread sexual harassment at the firm and pressure from its top investors. He was one of more than 20 staff members who were asked to leave.

“I love Uber more than anything in the world and, at this difficult moment in my personal life, I have accepted the investors request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight,” he said in a statement.

According to The New York Times, the board was leaning towards Meg Whitman, the chief of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, however the decision changed on Sunday afternoon when Mr Khosrowshahi was selected.

Another finalist, Jeffrey R. Immelt, the former chief of General Electric, reportedly withdrew on Sunday over a lack of support.

Mr Khosrowshahi’s selection as the new CEO could mark a new chapter for the embattled ride-hailing company. Along with sexual harassment allegations, Uber was also pressured with a Department of Justice criminal investigation into some of its methods and an intellectual property dispute with a self-driving car rival.
