Police foil armed robbery attack; kill 3 suspects

The Police in Kumasi on Monday night foiled an armed robbery attack and ended up killing three of the suspected robbers

The three together with two other accomplices were on their way to rob a house behind SSNIT Flats at Asuoyeboa in Kumasi.

They allegedly engaged the police in a shoot-out after failing to heed the call of the police to stop.

The police then gave them a hot chase and in an attempt to escape, started firing at the police car. The police then returned fire and in the process killed the three.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Osei Ampofoh Duku at a press briefing said the police had picked intelligence that a group of armed robbers were preparing to rob a house at Asuoyeboa on the said date.

He said the police laid ambush and around 2am a taxi cab with five occupants onboard appeared on the scene and the police signalled them to stop but they refused and the police gave them a hot chase.

He said the suspected robbers engaged the police in a shootout and at a point slowed down and the three victims got out and run into a nearby bush.

According to him the driver and one other suspect who the police believed sustained gunshot wounds, managed to escape.

He said the police called for a reinforcement and together with the new team, combed the area and found the three lying dead in the bush.

The police retrieved two locally manufactured pistols, two mobile phones, two empty cartridges, a knife, a wood and a cash amount of GHC24 on them.

Mr Ampofo Duku said one of the victims has been identified as Bernard Ali who was part of a gang of robbers who on July 21, this year, attacked a Chinese miner and his driver while on their way to the hospital.

He said in the attack, the driver of the Chinese miner was shot dead and the vehicle run into a ditch which enabled the Chinese to escape.

The police believed that the two accomplices who escaped might have sustained gunshot wounds and appealed to the public and health institutions to report anyone who reports to their facility with injuries suspected to be gunshots.
