Fernando, 30, moved to City from Porto in 2014 in a £12m deal and made 101 appearances for the club.

He playing five times as Manuel Pellegrini’s side claimed the League Cup in 2016 – his only silverware with the Citizens.

But the destroyer fell out of favour last term as he started just five Premier League games under new boss Pep Guardiola.

He was then left out of City’s pre-season tour the USA last month.

Fernando told the club’s website: “It’s been a pleasure to play for Manchester City.

“The club has looked after me incredibly well throughout my time here and I have enjoyed the challenge of playing for a top team in probably the world’s toughest league.

“The League Cup success of 2016 was a highlight for me and something I will never forget.”

Fernando is the eighth player released by Guardiola since City’s disappointed third-placed finish last season.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Nolito, Aleksandar Kolarov, Willy Caballero, Jesus Navas, Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta have all also been axed.
