Pep Guardiola blasts back at Gary Neville over his Phil Foden jibe, saying: ‘I won’t play him just because he’s young’

PEP GUARDIOLA has batted away claims by Gary Neville that City’s young starlet Phil Foden is playing for the wrong Manchester club.

The former United full back and skipper insisted the 17-year-old is “at the wrong Manchester club” – clearly hinting his former side would be the better option.

But Guardiola has reacted with a goading response to Neville, reminding him Foden is a City fan and calling the former England international a “journalist.”

City are proud of the progress they have made in youth football, after spending £200million constructing a state-of-the-art academy across the road from the Etihad Stadium.

The Etihad Campus has been seen as an early success and has even had rivals United worried they would be usurped as the best place to develop youngsters in the city.

Boss Guardiola is adamant he wants youngsters with enough quality to make it into the City first team though.

He said: “Which club is the right club? It’s a question to Gary Neville.

“My history is there. I’m not going to put young players in the squad because they are young.

“They will be in the squad because they have quality. I don’t have problems with that.

“The club is working well in terms of the academy. There are many players with good prospects for the future.

“We will be patient with those guys. They are going to train with us most, or part of, the season.

“Phil Foden is going to play in the next games. He has quality to play in that team.

“I’m so happy to have him. He’s a Mancunian, a City fan, a humble guy.

“He’s a fighter. He looks skinny but he’s a strong guy.”

City are preparing to take on European champions Real Madrid, the club that Guardiola went toe-to-toe with as Barcelona manager before leaving the Catalan giants with two Champions League titles in three years.

And Guardiola also branded Neville, 42, a “journalist.”

He added: “I thought even the journalist in the summer time were on holidays but I realise he is not.”
