Accra, June 30, GNA
– The National Union of WAEC Diploma Students (NUWADS) on Friday embarked on a
peaceful demonstration from the Kanda overpass to the West Africa Examination
Council (WAEC), over the annulment of the re-sit diploma examination.

The demonstrators,
who had placards some reading “WAEC Diploma is the key to Ghana educational
reforms”, why do you want to kill it, “Restore Oct/Nov ABCE Diploma now”.

They were singing
and dancing upon their arrival at the main entrance of WAEC.

The Head of Security
at WAEC and some other security at post with some police officers attended to
the demonstrators and maintained discipline on the ground.

The leader of the
union in his submission charged WAEC to rescind their decision by restoring the
diploma re-sit exams not to deny them of their educational right.

“This decision of
WAEC is distorting our education and will lay off 2,500 teachers in the country
as well.”

Meanwhile, the
Public Relation Officer of WAEC, Mrs Agnes Teye Cudjoe in an interview with the
Ghana News Agency said, there had been low patronage of the diploma re-sit
exams over the years and that it was very costly in conducting the exams.

She said hence the
cancellation.

Mrs Cudjoe said the
WAEC had not received any petition from NUWADS, and when received would be
directed to the appropriate authorities for action.
