But Lejeune, 26, has finally sealed his switch to St James’ Park and become Newcastle’s second summer signing on a five-year deal.

Boss Benitez is also eyeing up Hull winger Kamil Grosicki, 29, who he could land for around £10m.

The Lejeune breakthrough comes after Toon chiefs promised Benitez there would be transfer progress in the “coming days”.

Minutes from last Thursday’s Fans Forum, which was attended by managing director Lee Charnley, were published yesterday.

And they stated: “The club reinforced its commitment to strengthening in positions identified by the manager and aims to deliver positive news in the coming days.

“In a general discussion with the group, several factors that can impact upon transfers were explained.
