When he came back, hordes of the blood-sucking insects could be seen covering the car’s interior.

The horrific clip, which has been widely shared on Twitter, shows the man scooping up the flies in his hand.

It is suspected the bugs may have swarmed the car as they have receptors which detect the smell of human skin.

Mosquito bites can be life-threatening to humans as many species of the small flies transmit harmful diseases – including malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and Zika virus.

According to World Health Organisation figures, there were around 212 million cases of malaria and an estimated 429,000 deaths in 2015.

Ninety per cent of cases were in sub-Saharan Africa.
