Hafsa Obeng, GNA

Accra, July 17, GNA –
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashittey, on Monday, swore in
the newly elected Municipal Chief Executive for the La-Nkwantanag-Madina Municipal
Assembly, and tasked her to work towards maintaining peace in the Municipality.

Ms Jennifer Dede
Afegbedzi was able to secure the two-thirds of votes cast by assembly members
to confirm her after coming back for the third time.

Mr Ashittey said her
swearing-in was an ample affirmation of the confidence and trust the people had
in her, therefore, she was expected to live up to the responsibilities, trust
and the confidence reposed in her by the people.

He said: “For the
duration of your term, you are to serve the people in the various communities
within your area of jurisdiction to improve their general living conditions and
make them part of the decision making process and governance at the local

He noted that the
dynamics of the Assembly system some years back in terms of the socio-economic,
political, technical and administrative dimensions had changed considerably and
this called for strategic thinking.

“Your mandate places a
huge responsibility on you and would therefore require that you are well
briefed and tooled with the requisite knowledge and capacity to be well
positioned to offer useful and pragmatic policy choices, advice and
alternatives to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in your Assembly,” he said.

Mr Ashittey urged the
MCE to be courteous and co-operate with all interest groups within her
jurisdiction and avoid partisanship to ensure development, and to make
judicious use of all funds that would be made available to her.

“One does not perform
based on age, size, and position but on hard work and commitment,” he said.

Madam Afegbedzi
expressed appreciation for the opportunity granted her to serve her
Municipality and assured that with her team, she would endeavour to engage
stakeholders to ensure the rapid development of the Municipality.

She would focus on
employment, sanitation, environmental degradation among others, as they were
the major problems facing the Municipality, she said.
