Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 1 (2-1 on pens): Victor Lindelof concedes penalty with terrible challenge after Anthony Martial’s silky skill set up Jesse Lingard to score

VICTOR LINDELOF showed he is a bit rough around the edges — despite his £31million price tag.

Manchester United’s new Swedish defender clattered Theo Hernandez to gift Real Madrid’s Casemiro a second-half penalty leveller.

And it was more suited to a crunching NFL tackle here in the Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

His blunder sent this prestigious friendly to a penalty shootout — which United won — although there was more embarrassment for Lindelof as his dreadful spot-kick was easily saved by Kiko Casilla.

In fact the whole shootout was poor as SEVEN efforts were either saved or were missed.

Former United defender David May was critical of Lindelof and said on MUTV: “He looks maybe four or five yards too slow.”

Boss Jose Mourinho would have been cheered, though, by the display of Anthony Martial.

The French winger, 21, showed why he should be part of United’s future with a sublime piece of skill to create their 45th-minute opener.

Martial cut in from the flank and weaved past three Real players before squaring the ball for Jesse Lingard to side foot home.
When Louis van Gaal bought Martial he described the Monaco starlet, then 19, as the best player of his age.

His first season seemed to bear that out as he finished top scorer with 17 goals. Last season was not so good.

And Mourinho lumped him in with a group of players not taking his chances.

But team-mate Lingard said: “He is only going to get better. He is a nightmare for defenders.

“Anthony has got great feet. luckily I was at the far post to put it away.

United next face Barcelona on Wednesday in Maryland — home of the Washington Redskins — while Real play Manchester City on the same day in LA.
