Lewis Baker hoping European Under-21s Championship exploits can fire him into Chelsea first-team

LEWIS BAKER is hoping his efforts at the European Under-21 Championship will help him crack the first team at Chelsea.

The midfielder is a regular for Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions and played in the 0-0 Group A opener with holders Sweden on Friday.

But the academy graduate has made only one first-team appearance for the Blues — as a sub in an FA Cup third-round tie at Derby in 2014.

Now, after two seasons on loan at Dutch club Vitesse, Baker wants first-team action.

And he is hoping to catch Antonio Conte’s eye at the Euros in Poland.

He said: “I’ve got a thirst for it now. Definitely.


Chelsea are a fantastic club with world-class players.

“They are able to spend money on almost any player.

“They’ve also got the Champions League.

The veteran stopper was released by Manchester City at the end of last season.

And after selling Asmir Begovic to Brighton, the Blues want Caballero as his replacement.
