Kumasi buildings sitting on ticking time bomb – Architectural experts

kumasi1Experts in architecture and environmental planning at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) say many buildings in Kumasi are sitting on ticking time bomb.

Charles Essel and Godfred Owusu Boateng warn, that per their assessment, many buildings in the Kumasi metropolis are on the verge of collapse due to structural defects and the wet environments in which they have been cited.

The two who are lecturers in Architecture and Environmental science at the KNUST say the construction industry has been left to unskilled hands who are building in wetlands with substandard materials exposing many structures in the metropolis to imminent collapse.

Both experts who serve as executive members of Nickseth Company Limited, a leading construction company in Kumasi, gave the warning when they made a donation to the Kumasi Children’s Home to mark the company’s anniversary.

Architect Charles Essel and environmentalist Godfred Owusu Boateng are calling for the constitution of a professional body to start a postmortem of buildings in Kumasi.

“We see such buildings every day but we are not licensed by the state so one can only keep quiet and pray that they stand. However, when there is a tremor or large volumes of rain when the load bearing capacities give way there is no telling what disaster would happen,” Mr Essel said.

He is pleading with government to put a team comprising of the Ghana Institute of Architects, Ghana Institute of Builders, Ghana Institute of Builders, Ghana Institute of Engineers and the Ghana Institute of Surveyors to have a look at the issue.

“A team from the military or the police can be added to form a Council to go around to correct as well as educate people,” he added.

Mr Boateng, the environmentalist advised that special care is given to the environment adding “like the kidney functions in animals, the wetland is the kidney of the environment, so if human beings cannot live without a kidney, the same applies to the environment.”
