But the Spaniard’s superb display in the Kop’s 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in their Audi Cup semi-final at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday may have prompted a change of heart from his manager.

Klopp said afterwards: “If he plays like he did here, then yes of course he still has a future. It was a really good performance by Alberto and that’s the reason we kept him on.

“With every minute he seemed to get better and better. He was really fit.

“He has had a little problem with his thigh but he passed a little test before the game and he played really well.

“I don’t close the door on anybody. The players will decide themselves how many games they play this season.”

Klopp also reiterated to Barcelona that Philippe Coutinho is not for sale.

The Catalan giants are believed to be preparing another bid for the Brazilian playmaker after having a £70m offer rejected.

Klopp said: “I can understand why they believe Coutinho is so highly rated but they can save their energy.”

SunSport has reported how Klopp has pleaded with Philippe Coutinho to stay at Liverpool for at least another year.

But the Anfield boss is looking at Monaco’s Thomas Lemar as an option should he have to concede defeat in the fight to keep the Brazilian.

The Reds’ boss has held talks with playmaker Coutinho in an effort to thwart Barcelona’s interest in signing him.

Klopp asked Coutinho to stay at Anfield and allow the club to prove they can match his ambition and compete for trophies.
