He said their aim had to be to win the Premier League and FA Cup and at least reach the last eight of the Champions League.

United have certainly set off like they mean business, winning their opening two games against West Ham and Swansea by 4-0 to top the Prem table.

But Mourinho was so confident of what this squad could do he had raised the bar ahead of the new season.

One club source said: “The target he has given the players reflects how positive he feels about this group.

“He has made them believe in what can be achieved and there is a real confidence in this squad  they can do it.”

Boss Mourinho managed a cup double in his first season at Old Trafford, winning the EFL Cup and Europa League on top of the Community Shield.

United have not won the Premier League title since 2013, when Alex Ferguson was in charge.

And the last time they managed a Prem and FA Cup Double was in 1999, when they also won the Champions League.

Mourinho got another boost when Luke Shaw declared himself ready for a first-team return.

The left-back, who has been out for four months with a broken foot, played an hour for the Under-23s on Monday.

Shaw said: “I’m feeling really good and I’m looking for the first-team spot now. When the manager needs me I’m going to be ready.”
