Jaguar E-Pace Sets Guinness World Record During Barrel Roll

Jaguar just launched the E-Pace compact SUV with a Guinness World Record-winning barrel roll.

Stunt driver Terry Grant can be viewed on a Jaguar video shooting the E-Pace through a twisting barrel roll for a 15.3 meter- (50.19 foot) long leap.

During an international launch event in London yesterday, the driver took the all-new compact SUV for a 270-degree corkscrew-like spin, careened off a dirt hump, and safely landed. Grant now holds 21 Guinness World Record titles.

The global launch of the new five-seat 2018 Jaguar E-Pace comes after 25 months of road testing the SUV across four continents. Jaguar tested the vehicle through a number of extreme durability runs tied into its Art of Performance philosophy.

The London stunt was done to gain publicity and demonstrate the SUV’s durability and safety. It also confirms the brand’s “sports car DNA” that combines performance with the functionality of an all-wheel drive utility vehicle.

Here’s the video of the Guinness award-winning stunt driver turning the E-Pace into a high-risk amusement park ride.

The E-Pace stunt was performed at ExCel in London, which the company said was among only a handful of venues in the UK large enough to handle the 160-meter run (about 525 feet) needed before the leap.

Grant had done one of his previous record-breaking stunts in a Jaguar F-Pace but had never before done the barrel run.

“As far as I am aware no production car has ever cleanly completed a bona-fide barrel roll and therefore it has always been an ambition of mine to perform one ever since I was a boy. After driving the Jaguar F-Pace in the record-breaking loop-the-loop, it has been amazing to help launch the next chapter of the Pace family in an even more dramatic dynamic feat,” Grant said.

It’s been quite a year for the Jaguar brand and the Pace family. In March, the British company launched the I-Pace all-electric concept SUV, which was highlighted at the Geneva Motor Show.

In April, the Jaguar F-Pace took the 2017 World Car of the Year. The automaker’s fastest selling vehicle also took the 2017 World Car Design of the Year award.

In 2015, Jaguar’s design chief Ian Callum said that within two years, the company would add two electric vehicles to its product lineup. One would be an all-electric crossover SUV and the other an all-electric large luxury sedan.

The I-Pace appears to meet one of those goals, with no word yet on a battery electric sedan. They would be coming out in 2018 and 2019, he said, as the automaker prepared to meet increasingly stringent vehicle emissions regulations.

The I-Pace, along with the F-Pace and E-Pace, seem to position the British brand on solid footing. Ever since Ford sold the company to Indian giant Tata Motors in 2008, Jaguar has been working hard at restoring its image as a high-performance luxury brand. The new crossover SUVs seem to be supporting that effort.
