International Fellowships for Field Research in Korea, 2018 Scholarship Positions 2017 2018




The Korea Foundation is offering Fellowships for Field Research for overseas researchers. The field research period should take place between January 1 and December 31, 2018.

For the purpose of promoting overseas research in Korean studies, the Korea Foundation offers program support for the Fellowship for Field Research to provide eminent overseas Korean Studies scholars and experts in relevant fields with the opportunity to conduct on-site field research in Korea and access relevant resource materials.

The Korea Foundation is a non-profit public diplomacy organization established in 1991 “to contribute to encouraging a better understanding of Korea and to promoting international friendship in the international community.”

Course Level: Fellowships are available to conduct on-site field research in Korea.

Study Subject: Fellowships are awarded in the field of Korean studies.

Scholarship Award:
Type A: KRW 2,000,000
Type B: KRW 2,300,000
Type C (PhD holders only): KRW 2,600,000
Type D (PhD holders only): KRW 3,000,000

Number of Scholarships: Approx. 30 per year

Scholarship can be taken in Korea

Eligibility: Overseas researchers of comparative/case studies in Korean studies or Korea-related areas in the field of humanities or social sciences who fall under one of the following criteria:

  • Doctoral candidates who have completed their required coursework and are in the process of writing their doctoral dissertation
  • B-1. Lecturers or researchers with less than ten years of experience in teaching or research at a university or research institute (PhD degree holders only)
  • B-2. Lecturers or researchers with at least five years of experience in teaching or research at a university or research institute (non-PhD degree holders only)
  • Assistant professors or individuals currently in a professional/research field with over 10 and less than 20 years of career experience (PhD degree holders only)
  • Associate/full professors or individuals currently in a professional/research field with over 20 years of career experience (PhD degree holders only)

Nationality: Overseas researchers can apply for these fellowships.

Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have previous degree.

Type A, B

  • Application form (Download available at the KF Application Portal)
  • Curriculum vitae (including the applicant’s signature)
  • Research proposal
  • Proposal for cooperative research with a Korean scholar
  • Two letters of reference
    Head of the applicant’s institution (university president, dean, department chair, institute director, etc.)
    Dissertation supervisor in applicant’s country of  residence (only for PhD candidates)
  • Evidence of current employment or enrollment (official letter/certificate)
  • Graduate school (MA & PhD) transcripts
  • Copy of the most recently obtained academic degree
  • Certificate of coursework completion

Type C, D

  • Application form (Download available at the KF Application Portal)
  • Curriculum vitae (including the applicant’s signature)
  • Research proposal (free format, 5-10 pages)
  • Proposal for cooperative research with a Korean scholar
  • Two letters of reference

Head office of the applicant’s institution (university president, dean, department chair, institute director)

An individual capable of evaluating the applicant’s lecture/research proposal (expert or professor of applicant’s country of residence)

  • Copy of the most recently obtained academic degree
  • Evidence of current employment (official letter/cer
