Implementation of National Towing Levy suspended indefinitely

Public concerns over the implementation of the National Towing Project for broken-down and abandoned vehicles where motorists are expected to be levied (Road Safety fees) to automatically have access to towing services have compelled the Ministry of Transport to suspend the exercise.

A statement dated June 19, 2017 and signed by the sector Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, said although the project has been subjected to a sense of stakeholder consultation, the feedback from public discourse suggests the need for further consultations.

This, he noted, will assist in public understanding of the rationale for the project.

The Ministry of Transport had earlier scheduled July 1, 2017, for the implementation of the National Towing Project for broken-down and abandoned vehicles. However, while the public gladly welcomes the initiative, they have not been happy, especially, with the Road Safety Fee expected to be charged for the exercise.

A cross section of the public has, therefore, threatened to embark on series of demonstration exercises should the government go ahead to implement the initiative.

Due to the concerns raised by the public, the Parliamentary Select Committee on Transport, Monday, June 19, 2017, conveyed an emergency meeting with all stakeholders involved in the implementation of the exercise to find an amicable solution to the issue.

The Transport Minister acting further on the issue has directed the National Road Safety Commission to further consult with the appropriate stakeholders over the concerns raised including the date for the commencement of the project prior to its implementation.

Mr. Asiamah has, therefore, appealed for calm over the issue while he awaits the outcome of his directives.

“Stationary and broken down vehicles account for 21% of fatal vehicle crashes every year, on the average. It remains our expectation that, collectively, we can find the most effective solution to this concern in the larger public interest,”the statement in part quoted Hon. Asiamah as saying.
