Ghanaian educational institutions are rife with financial irregularities, according to a report by the IMANI Center

for Policy and Education.

The report ranked fiscal recklessness like outstanding debt and fund misappropriation in public organizations from 2012 to 2014.

The Ministry of Education was among the top six offenders, misappropriating GHC210 million over three years. Polytechnic institutions reported ghc84.2 million in irregularities, and pre-universities lost GHC53.6 million; over 340 million in total.

According to IMANI, educational institutions too often defy the Public Procurement Act or refuse to comply with mandatory financial reporting, among other offenses.

The center warned that continued financial recklessness would endanger the sustainability of these educational organizations and ultimately affect Ghana’s socioeconomic development.
