Berlin, July 17,
(GNA/dpa) – Former sprint star and IAAF council member Frankie Fredericks
has been provisionally suspended pending an investigation into a potential
ethics violation, the athletics governing body said Monday.

The Athletics
Integrity Unit (AIU) of the IAAF said it was looking into a payment made
by a company owned by Papa Massata Diack – son of disgraced former athletics
federation chief Lamine Diack – to a firm owned by Fredericks “on or close
to the date of the IOC vote awarding the 2016 Olympic Games to Rio de
Janeiro.”

As a member of the
IOC, the now 49-year-old Namibian Fredericks was able to vote on the 2016
Olympic host city when it was decided in Copenhagen on October 2, 2009,

The four-time Olympic
silver medallist had previously quit as head of the evaluation commission for
the 2024 Olympic Games, while denying any wrongdoing in accepting almost
300,000 dollars from Papa Massata Diack’s agency, Pamodzi Sports Consulting.

According to French Newspaper
Le Monde and based on US tax documentation, Papa Massata Diack paid 299,300
dollars on October 2, 2009 to an offshore firm linked to Fredericks and based
in the Seychelles.

“I categorically
deny any direct or indirect involvement in any untoward conduct and confirm
that I have never breached any law, regulation or rule of ethics in respect of
any IOC election process,” Fredericks said in a previous statement.

Fredericks claimed the
money from Pamodzi was for marketing services he provided from 2007 to 2011.
