Govt’s one region, one public university project on course – Seth Terkper

123Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, says government is committed to improving access to tertiary institutions in the country.

The government, he says wants to establish one tertiary institution in regions that do not have one in the country to address the deficit in tertiary education.

“The establishment of the University for Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya in the Eastern Region is in fulfillment of our vision to provide at least one public university in all ten regions,” he said.

The Finance Minister made this revelation when he addressed Parliament during the presentation of government’s Supplementary Budget.

On the newly created universities in the country with special mention of the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Mr Terkper stated that they are performing well and many of them have started passing out graduates.

Community Day Senior High School

Touching on government’s commitment to put up 200 Community Day Schools across the country, the Finance Minister said the project contrary to claims is ongoing.

The government has so far commenced work on about 123 new senior high schools (SHS) with many of them being at an advanced level.

Mr Terkper said about nine of the Day Schools have been commissioned by President John Mahama during his “Accounting to the people” tour in the Central, Western, Volta, Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and the Eastern Regions.

These schools, he said have improved facilities, modern school infrastructure including workshop, dormitories, self-accommodating blocks and science laboratories.

To address the issue of transportation that is prevalent with secondary schools in the country, he said the government has given out 300 buses and 200 pickups to some SHSs.
