Get your adrenaline pumping by trying the world’s fastest city centre zipwire which has opened in London for the summer

STANDING on a platform ten storeys up, I have some of the best views of London.

From my vantage point high above the South Bank, inset below, I can see Parliament, the London Eye and The Shard – its glass glinting in the sun.

It would feel peaceful if it was not for the fact I was about to hurl myself down the world’s biggest, fastest city-centre zipline.

Welcome to Zip World London, a 225-metre-long, 35-metre-high double zipline in Archbishop Park, a short walk from Waterloo station.

Open until October 1, it is the latest offering from Zip World – which in 2013 in Wales launched Zip World Velocity, the world’s fastest zipline.

The London ride may not hit the same eye-watering speed of 100mph, but does top 30mph.

And unlike its Welsh cousin, where you are released by Zip World staff, here you have to launch yourself – which requires some guts.

Founder Barry Shaverin says: “It’s the perfect halfway point between a rollercoaster, which isn’t scary enough, and a bungee jump or skydive, which is too frightening.

“You get that adrenaline kick without being in fear for your life.

“It’s a unique take on one of the world’s most impressive skylines.”

Harnessed and helmeted, I am a sweaty mess by the time I have climbed the stairs to the launchpad.

After a few glorious moments taking in the view as I catch my breath, I turn my attention to the zipline, stretching ominously into the distance.

I am clipped on, given a final safety briefing and shuffle toward my fate – a few metal steps leading to thin air. The line connecting me to the wire is so slack, I feel like I’ve got no safety gear on.

Too late to go back, I take a deep breath and leap into nothing.

The line tightens, catches me and I whoop like a giddy kid as I begin to pick up speed – those fabulous city views rushing by on either side of me.

Forcing myself not to shut my eyes, I snatch a blurred glimpse of Big Ben before the arrival platform zooms into view.

Then it is all over too soon. Adrenaline courses through my body and my heart is pumping as I am hauled off the line. My legs are shaking. But such great views of the city, with an almighty thrill to boot? Sign me up for another go.

With adult tickets starting at £22.50 and kids (age eight and over) from £16.50, Zip World London works out cheaper than the London Eye, which costs from £23.45 for adults and £18.95 kids.

Family packages are also available.

The ride is open daily from 10am to 7pm and the nearest Tube stations are Lambeth North, Waterloo and Westminster.
