Gregory, 63, last managed Crawley Town in starting in 2013 but stepped down a year later after he had health issues.

He had had open heart surgery five months before his departure and wanted to give his body the opportunity to properly recover.

But now he has deemed it the right time to get back into management in Indian football.

Gregory said: “I am very excited to have joined Chennaiyin FC and would like to thank the club owners for believing in me and giving me this wonderful opportunity.

“Chennaiyin has been one of the most consistent teams in the ISL so far and I want to continue the great work done by Marco Materazzi in the first three seasons.

“I am determined to help the club win the ISL trophy back for the people of Chennai and Tamil Nadu.”

Chennaiyin finished seventh out of eight in the Super League table last season and failed to make the play-offs.

But they have been successful in previous years, winning the final in 2015 and finishing runners-up in 2014.

Indian Super League squads can vary from year to year, but last season former Liverpool ace John Arne Riise and Brazilian Eder played for Chennaiyin.

The team are part-owned by Indian cricket superstar MS Dhoni.
