Every region will get a major military garrison – Mahama

militaryPresident John Dramani Mahama has announced a new government policy that will see every region of the country getting a major military garrison.

“So, in the Upper East [Region], we are going to upgrade the Bazoa Barracks, in the Upper West [Region], we are going to establish a proper barracks and have a military garrison in there and in the Central Region, we are going to do same so that all parts of the country are well taken care of.” President Mahama announced this on Monday, July 4, when he swore in the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Obed Boamah Akwah, and other commanding officers at the Flagstaff House.

He lauded the new Chief for his track record. “We recognized you as a smart and loyal officer and that is why you have won the confidence to be appointed to this position.” President Mahama talked up investment government has made in recent times into the armed forces. He said many barracks have been upgraded. Roads have been repaired, he added.

“Over the years, we will continue to invest more in our armed forces.” Major General Akwa expressed gratitude to the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces for the confidence reposed in him. “We are aware of the greater responsibilities that go with these new appointments,” he admitted, pledging loyalty to the state. Major General Akwa was appointed to his new position on the same day four other senior officers were promoted.

Brigadier General W. A. Ayamdo was promoted to the rank of Major General, Brigadier General S. K. Adeti was promoted to the rank of Major General, Commodore S. Amoama was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and Air Commodore G. S. Evans was promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal.

Major General W. A. Ayamdo was also appointed by President Mahama as Commandant of the Military Academy and Training School, Air Vice Marshal G. S. Evans was appointed as Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre to replace the new Chief of Army Staff and Rear Admiral S. Amoama was named Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

Brigadier General S. B. Alloh will now head the Northern Command, Brigadier General C. B. Alhassan will now head the Central Command and Brigadier General F. Ofori has been named Commander for Special Services Brigade.
