E/R: Doctor arrested for allegedly stealing hospital equipment

The Medical Superintendent of New Abirem government hospital, Dr. Osei Bonsu has been arrested by the Police for allegedly attempting to steal medical equipment to his private hospital in Kumasi.

He was arrested following the interception of Ministry of Health vehicle in New Abirem township conveying some hospital equipment away to Kumasi.

The items include 1 Delivery lamp, 3 hospital beds 1 water hose all belonging to the hospital.

Conforming the incident to Kasapa News, the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, said Dr. Osei Bonsu owns a private clinic in Kumasi and it is believed he was transporting the items through the driver Edward Damptey when the vehicle was intercepted.

He said, upon the arrest and interrogation of the driver who was conveying the stolen items, the driver claimed the items were scraps hence asked by the medical Superintendent to send it to his private clinic at Kumasi.

Dr Osei Bonsu also during interrogation told police it was the first time transporting such items to his private clinic in Kumasi and that was corroborated by the driver.

“Police is however to ascertain with the Store Keeper whether any medical consumables or items have been missing from the stores since he assumed office over a year ago,”ASP Ebenezer Tetteh said.

He added that after investigations the Medical Superintendent will be arraigned before court for stealing.

Meanwhile, he has been granted police enquiry bail.
