ECG workers demonstrate to demand removal of MD

ecgWorkers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are demonstrating at the company’s head office for the removal from office of the Managing Director, whom they said had attained the compulsory retirement age of 60 years.

Clad in red and wielding placards with inscriptions, “You have finished serving your term”, “What do you have to show for during your tenure”, “MD, leave the scene for others to come”, “You betrayed our trust”, among others and amidst drumming and dancing, the workers chanted Mr Dwamena’s name.

The demonstrating staff also broke a glass when they were refused entry into the company’s premises.

The demonstration however took a twist when the police from the Accra Divisional Command attempted to arrest the leadership of the workers for flouting the public order act.

According to the Divisional Command, ACP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, the leadership of the workers union failed to serve the police with a notice of their demonstration.

She thus instructed that the Chairman of the Junior Staff Workers Union of the Public Utility Workers Union, Mr Ben Kanoese be arrested; a situation which nearly degenerated into a near brawl between the police and the demonstrators.

ACP Addo-Danquah thus asked Mr Kanoese to immidiately leave the company’s premises and report himself to the Regional Police Command at 1pm.
