He yesterday said of his bid to rival Shania Twain: “I’ve always been a huge fan of new country.

“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to record this album. I can’t wait to share my music.”

The deal with Warner’s East West Records will see his disc released in the autumn.

Richie, 53 — who we have mocked up as Shania, is no stranger to being a singer after starring in stage musicals including Boogie Nights and Grease.

He released albums in 1997 and 2000 but both failed to chart. In 2003 his Children In Need cover version of Wham’s I’m Your Man got to No2.

But the first six-part series, which saw the couple travel to Ireland to find Kat’s long-lost son, faces the chop after disappointing ratings.
