Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Derrick Luckassen’s move to PSV expounded by AZ

Technical Director of AZ Alkmaar Max Huiberts says Derrick Luckassen’s ambition of moving to a bigger club in the coming season forced them to negotiate his release to PSV Eindhoven.

The 22-year-old defender joined PSV on a five-year deal few weeks ago.

Luckassen graduated from the Al Alkmaar youth academy and went on to establish himself as a linchpin of the side.

However, his desire to make the leap to one of the top clubs in the world, forced Alkmaar to sell him to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven, according to Max Huiberts.

“We were aware of Derrick’s ambitions to make this year the next step in his career,” Huiberts said.

“With PSV, there was a club that also wanted to meet the terms of AZ.

“Since his youth education, Derrick has made good progress every year in his development.

“We wish him success in his further career.”

Luckassen made 35 Eredivisie appearances, all starts, and netted three times as AZ finished sixth last season.

He also made 12 outings, all starts, in the Europa League same campaign.

Born to Ghanaian parents in Amsterdam, the 22-year-old remains eligible to represent the Black Stars at senior level although he currently plays for the Dutch youth side.
