Don’t hide from your people – Local Gov’t Minister to MMDCEs

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, has admonished all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) not to hide from the people that the President of the Republic has appointed them to serve.

She wants the MMDCEs to always avail themselves so as to be accessible in their local jurisdictions.

Doing so, she noted, will enable them to freely interact with the people to know their concerns and or challenges, and find practical solutions to them.

Their closeness with the people, she added, will also enable the people to participate in the decision making process of the Assemblies.

This, according to Hajia Alima Mahama, will enable the MMDCEs live in harmony with their people so as to avoid the animosity that usually develop between some communities and their DCEs.

“Effective decentralization should bring about development to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and with it the creation of employment avenues which go to enhance the living standards of our people. As Chief Executives, this is the process you have been appointed to lead and it behoves on you to work hard to earn the respect of all stakeholders in the decentralization process by being objective, effective, and efficient in the exercise of your leadership role.

This means that you must also be accessible to all. For instance, you must interact and collaborate with stakeholders such as the traditional authorities, faith-based organizations, civil society organizations, your core staff as well as Heads of Departments, the Presiding Member and Assembly Members and of course, your Member of Parliament in your attempt to identify and resolve social and development problems in a pragmatic way,” she noted.

Hajia Mahama made this observation when delivering her keynote address at a five-day orientation program from MMDCEs at the Local Government Training Institute in Accra on Monday.

The orientation course was to equip the MMDCEs to know their scope of work to enhance results in the administration of the Assemblies.

It was also meant to equip the MMDCEs with the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for effective transformation leadership at the local level as well as create opportunities for selected MDAs to share information on the priority projects and programs with the MMDCEs.

The program is being attended by 200 confirmed MMDCEs from across the country. It is under the theme: ‘Bringing prosperity and equal opportunities for all through effective decentralization’.

Urging the MMDCEs to follow laid down procedures in the discharge of their duties, Hajia Alima Mahama also tasked the local Assembly heads to be more proactive and come out with innovative measures to improve on revenue mobilization at the Assemblies.
