Diego Costa set to rejoin Atletico Madrid – but not play for anyone until January because of their transfer ban

DIEGO COSTA is ready to rejoin Atletico Madrid – but not play a match for ANYONE until January.

The Chelsea striker reportedly favours joining the Spaniards rather than a mega-rich Chinese Super League club – even though Atletico cannot register new players until their transfer ban ends in January.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone has U-turned on plans to loan Costa to a club in China or Brazil, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

The La Liga giants hope to quickly re-sign the Brazil-born Spain star, then spend six months building him up to peak condition.

Costa stepped up his interest in leaving Stamford Bridge after Chelsea boss Antonio Conte hinted last month that the targetman might not be his first-choice frontman next term.

Conte is determined to strengthen the Premier League champions in all areas.

And old boy Romelu Lukaku is a leading target, albeit valued by Everton at more than £70million.

Costa, 28, has bagged 59 goals in 129 games for the Blues, compared to 43 in four years with Atletico.
