Burning of excavators: Xtra Gold Mining company to sue govt

Xtra gold Mining Company, a large scale Lease mining holder in the Eastern region is to initiate legal action against the state over destruction of seven excavators and other mining equipments worth millions of cedis by Operation Vanguard Taskforce deployed to the Eastern region.

The taskforce on Monday invaded the mining concession of the company amidst firing of gunshots, set ablaze the excavators and also confiscated several water pumping machines, cat pressure gauge, grinding machines, cat engine pumps, Honddy Welding set, mobile phones, monies and other valuables.

The operation targeted Small Scale Miners working for Extra Gold Mining firm on their concession. Two persons were arrested while others escaped.

Addressing the media Tuesday, the Director of Xtra Gold Mining Company, Victor Nkansah explained that, the company is a licensed company with valid permits by all appropriate regulatory bodies.

He said Operation Vanguard taskforce was duely notified by the regulators therefore his company is surprised that the military lawlessly rampaged the mining site to destroy and confiscate its properties.

Xtra gold mining company has been operating in the area for about a decade. The company owns Greenstone Belt (“Kibi Gold Belt”) which is the last greenstone belt to be drilled and developed in Ghana.

The Company holds the mineral rights to 5 concessions (the “Concessions”), totaling 226 square kilometers (22,600 hectares), located in the Kibi Gold Belt.

The gold belt is analogous to the Ashanti Gold Belt which has 140 million ounces of proven gold reserves discovered to date, based on publicly available information. These two gold belts share similar geological features.

Some of the  miners  working with Xtra Gold company vented out their frustrations to Starr News about the operations of the taskforce,calling on government to have a second look at the violent approach the taskforce has employed to carry out its operations.According to them, mining has provided the youth employment and boosted the local economy hence fighting against.

The Operation Vanguard taskforce has between August 3rd to August 4th ,2017 arrested 26 illegal miners defiantly operating the region and confiscated several other mining equipments.
