Britons are the third largest group of those in slavery in the UK, with a 70 per cent jump in cases last year.

NCA director Will Kerr said: “Sometimes there is a belief it only affects foreign nationals.

“But there are just as many British victims and offenders.

“We have found it in every medium and large town and city in the UK.”

The NCA believes tens of thousands of victims are being exploited in the UK by people traffickers.

It has more than 300 live investigations across the country.

Officers found victims from more than 100 countries come to Britain on the false promise of better lives.

Instead, they are sold into prostitution, or paid a pittance to work in farming, construction, food processing, car washes or even harvest cannabis.

Since 2013 officers have seen a 30 per cent year-on-year rise in victims coming forward.

Mr Kerr added: “It’s fair to say, we’ve been shocked by the scale and scope of it.”
