Binduri District improves on open defecation

By Rihanna Akologo, GNA

Binduri (UE), Aug. 24, GNA – The Binduri District has improved upon its
quest to end Open Defecation this year as 20 out of 21 communities passed the
Open Defecation Free (OPD) exercise in the first six months of the year.

The communities that passed the exercise are Aporinzua, Azumsapeliga
-Upper, Atuba-Mognpri, Tambiigu No. 2, Nafkoliga, Sakpari, Asaliga-Zaa,
Ninsako, and Poayamire .

The others are Yarigungu-Asinku-Akuned, Wispeogo, Avoasi, Widan-Bugre,
Azumsapeliga-Lower, Agoldabod, Barabogo-Tengbeogo, Yaligu-Mognori, Kulok-Awago,
Tansia-Zeogo, Tefauk-Sakpari, and Bulugu.

The Koluk-Natinga community could not qualify due to lack of team work
and poor leadership.

Mr Charles Yinbil Awuni, the District Environmental Officer, in an
interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the aim of the ODF exercise was to
ensure that all communities within the Binduri District had private toilets in
every house, so that there would not be the need to defecate indiscriminately.

For a community to pass, all the houses must not only have toilets but
also ashes or soap to wash one’s hands after visiting the toilet, he said.

He said the ultimate purpose of the exercise was to prevent sanitation
related diseases such as Cholera and Malaria.

He enumerated the advantages of having a toilet in the house and said despite
those advantages, many of the people did not want to accept the concept until
they were convinced that it would help reduce diarrhea diseases and malaria.

Other challenges in the communities were lack of team spirit and leaders
not respected by the youth.

The exercise is being sponsored by the United Nation International
Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

He appealed to all Environmental Sanitation Officers to take the
exercise seriously so that open defecation would end.

He said government alone could not solve the sanitation problems and
urged every individual to make his or her home clean.
