Bedbugs invade Senior High Schools

School DormSome Senior High Schools in the Eastern region are battling a wave of bedbugs infestations which has created some health problems for the students.

Starr News can confirm that, the situation is worse at the Ghana Senior High School and Assesewa Senior High School.

At a Parents Teachers Association meeting held on Saturday at Assesewa SHS, some parents raised serious concerns over the development and called on School authorities to as a matter of urgency fumigate the dormitories to protect the students from diseases.

Some students in interview with Starr news complained bitterly about the situation but said several complaints to school authorities have yielded no results as they do little about the infestation.

Information also gathered from the Ghana Senior High School, indicates that, most dormitories have been infested by bedbugs creating inconveniences for the students.

Bedbugs are parasitic organisms that sucks and feed on human blood.

Some members of Ghana National Association Teachers, GNAT, who were in the school for a workshop on Friday complained over similar bedbugs infestations in the dormitories of the students.

The Deputy General Secretary in Charge of Education and Professional Development of GNAT, Miss Gifty Anyogbe Apanbil during her closing ceremony, entreated the Ghana Education Service to liaise with the Environmental departments in the districts to fumigate Schools across the country due to increasing complaints of infestations in most schools nationwide.

“We want the GES and the Environmental and Sanitation departments in our districts to collaborate to deal with the sanitation problems in our institutions.

“Our institutions are having problems with insect infestation so we want the GES to collaborate with headmasters and the Environmental departments to deal with the problems…so that our students get peace of minds to study.”
