Aston Villa want Peter Crouch to leave Stoke and join John Terry as Steve Bruce plots ambitious summer raid

STEVE BRUCE wants Peter Crouch to be his next big-name signing for ambitious Aston Villa.

Bruce hopes the 6ft 7in ex-England striker will fancy the challenge of playing every week and following John Terry to the Championship giants.

Crouch, 36, is still in first-team plans at Stoke but he is unlikely to figure much next season and the time may be right for him to move on.

Bruce does not want to pay a big fee for Crouch because he knows he will have to pick up his Premier League wages.

Owner Doctor Tony Xia dug deep to get the money together for Terry, and Crouch would need a similar cash lure to make the move.

Crouch is in the £4million-a-year salary bracket and he would not be looking to take a pay cut at Villa. But a decent deal with a promotion bonus would swing it.

It would be a sentimental return for Crouch and also complete a hat-trick of second spells at clubs after Tottenham and Portsmouth.

Villa are also haggling with Sheffield Wednesday over right-back Alan Hutton. They want £1m while the Owls want him on a free.

Championship new boys Bolton want Liam Palmer from Wednesday on a season’s loan. Trotters boss Phil Parkinson is keen but may have to come up with cash to clinch the deal.

Meanwhile, Villa have agreed to sell left-back Jordan Amavi to Sevilla for an undisclosed fee.

But they hope to sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in another loan deal, and have also been linked with Stoke’s Glenn Whelan.
