Assembly members held hostage at Kintampo

assemblyMembers of the Kintampo South District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo region were on Friday held hostage by some irate youth for failing to confirm newly nominated District Chief Executive for the area, James Dikalatob.

The youth said to be supporters of the nominee were unhappy that their candidate was not confirmed.

Kintampo South District Assembly had lacked a DCE since December 31, 2015 after President JohnMahama sacked the former DCE, Kwadwo Nyame Datiakwa.

President Mahama nominated James Dikalatob three weeks ago to be confirmed by assembly members but out of 40 members, 23 voted against the new nominee.

This means that Mr.  Dikalatob could not garner the two-thirds majority for his confirmation.

He is left with two more chance to convince the assembly members to vote for him or lose out on the position since the local government act allows three shots at the post.

Presiding Member of the Assembly, Obed Owusu Sarfo in an interview with Adom News said but for the intervention of the police, the situation would have turned bloody.

He claimed the angry supporters who stormed the place threatened to attack the assembly members for not voting for their candidate.

Mr. Owusu Sarfo said they fear for their lives and appealed to the police for continous protection.
