Akufo-Addo swears-in Sophia Akufo as new CJ

President Akufo-Addo has sworn in Justice Sophia Akuffo as the new Chief Justice.

The new CJ was earlier approved by consensus when parliament sat Monday, June 19, 2017 to consider the report of the Appointments Committee on her appointment.

Justice Akuffo, who has been at the apex court for over two decades, will take over from her ladyship Georgina Theodora Wood, who retired on June 8, 2017, after 10 years as Chief Justice and 47 years in public service.

The president charged Justice Akuffo to ensure social justice and uphold the rule of law at all times even if members of his government break the law.

Present at the event held in Accra were former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufour, former Chief Justice Georgina Wood, chiefs, ministers, and parliamentarians among others.
