But superdad Ash has responded to his partner’s death, taking on Ember’s roles to ensure the cubs are cared for.

The protective two-year-old now calls out to the youngsters and feeds them, regurgitating food for them to digest.

The 11-week-old cubs, three male, two female, follow him around their enclosure at Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens in Burford, Oxfordshire.

And professionals say they’re delighted with the development. Mammal keeper Hayley Mullaney said: “Ash calls to them and they follow him. He’s also very attentive and tends to sit near the den as they’re resting.

“The cubs themselves are still slightly unsettled. However they’re displaying signs that they are calmer.

“As a pack they’re doing well and we are very encouraged by Ash’s behaviour.”

Assistant curator Chris Kibbey said: “The sight of Ash taking care of the cubs is giving us all cautious hope that Ember’s life was not in vain.

“It really has been quite touching to watch him in action.”
