$19bn China aid: Gov’t to build new Psychiatric Hospital

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced government’s intention to construct a new Psychiatric Hospital as part of the US$19 billion Chinese deal he helped secured.

He’s optimistic that the facility when completed will complement the nations healthcare delivery efforts.

The fund, according to Dr. Bawumia will also cater for other projects which include:

• Development of the Nyinahin and Kyebi bauxite mines and an aluminium refinery

• Construction of the Eastern and Central rail lines including its extension to Paga

• The Boankra and Buipe inland ports and Paga inland terminal.

• 910 km of road network

• Four interchanges (Sofoline, Oforikrom, PTC Takoradi, Danquah Circle)

• 10 industrial parks in 10 regions

• 25,000 houses for the security services, 100,000 social housing units

• 25 district hospitals, Western Regional Hospital

• Reconstruction and rehabilitation of 8,286 collapsing classrooms, upgrading 42 SHSs into model schools, teaching and learning materials.

• 228 Buses and 198 Pickup trucks for schools.

• Irrigation and water transmission systems in northern Ghana.

He was speaking at a China-Africa Joint Research and Exchange Programme organised by the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) on the theme: “Building Resilient Industries and Infrastructure for Economic Transformation in Africa: The Role of China”.

He noted the country have immediate infrastructure needs between US $15 to 20 billion in areas such as rail, water, energy etc, hence the Chinese partnership is in the best interest of the nation.

“…We have US $460 billion potentially sitting in the ground somewhere and we need US$20billion for our rapid economic transformation,…So we need development partners to refine this bauxite, but we want to develop it in Ghana. That is why we want to set up a refinery in Ghana so we can refine and export.”
